Title: “BC Forestry – Past, Present and the Missing Link to Sustainable Future Forests”

Abstract: I’ll talk of being the fifth generation of family involvement in BC forestry, a general commentary on the overall past forestry history to date and speak to the still missing fundamental consideration in forest management that is required to ever achieve real sustainability in our forests. I hope for a good conversation with participants and invite engagement on the topic of sustainability.

Bio: Born in 1940 in a remote Phillips Arm logging camp, I moved with my family to Cortes Island for my schooling years, worked at a variety of logging jobs during high school to help underwrite 5 years at UBC for a Commerce degree followed by two years work toward a trip to check out where my ancestors had come from. That morphed into 3 1/2 years of travel through 40 countries before returning to Vancouver in ’67. I worked in Vancouver for six months before coming to the realization that my life would be much better if I returned to Cortes Island. I have lived there since, working in a small sawmill, house construction, oyster farming, more sawmilling until I retired at 76.
