Bio: Keith is a registered professional forester in BC and a long-time resident of Daajing Giids in Haida Gwaii. He began his forestry career at the Research Branch of the Ministry of Forests before moving to the BC Ministry of Environment. He spent 10 exciting years with MOE before starting off his consulting career, and has worked all over BC, across Canada, and mostly internationally in the last 10 years.
He was the first chair of the BC Forest Practices Board from 1995 to 2000 and decided to get involved in forest certification with the Forest Stewardship Council when he left the Board. He has continued that to today. From his base in Haida Gwaii he has done many FSC audits around the world and has had the opportunity to work in the great rainforests of the world – Haida Gwaii and the BC Coast, Borneo, the Amazon basin and the Congo basin. He has taken on key policy and standard development roles with FSC while also continuing to do work with the Council of the Haida Nation and other governments on Haida Gwaii. Currently, most of his work is with for Assurance Services International, a Germany based company, conducting audits and investigatins related to FSC certificates in countries around the world.
Since his days as a grad student at UBC and from the start of his career with MOF he has been involved in forest practices regulations and standards, statutory and voluntary, and has had the opportunity to write these requirements, implement them, enforce them and audit performance against them. Recently, he had a unique opportunity to study the long history of regulation in BC.
